Is Enagic Kangen Water a Scam? (8 Ways To Make Money)

Hey, are you interested in drinking clean water and earning income too? Enagic says you can be healthy, wealthy, and happy with their Kangen Water. They say they have 8 different ways to make money. This might be a dream come true. Is this a scam or what?

Some of you are probably thinking there’s gotta be a shiny button here… you know a pyramid scheme.

There are some important considerations to know first before you join them.

  1. Are the products any good?
  2. Can you really make money?

By the way, I’m really happy to see you are doing your research. It’s the best way to find legitimate ways to make money and not get scammed.

Just so you know, I am not connected with Enagic.

I research products and write reviews on them to help people make informed decisions.

Let’s begin…

Enagic Review Summary

Enagic Kangen Water MachineProduct Name:  Enagic Kangen Water

Founder: 1974,  Hironari Ohshiro (CEO Enagic International, Inc.)

Product Type: MLM – Kangen Alkaline Ionizers and Water Filtration Machines

Price: FREE to join

Best For: Anyone who is good at recruiting people to an MLM platform

Summary: Enagic is a legitimate MLM (Multi-level marketing) company that manufactures alkaline ionizers and water filtration machines. They have been in business for over 40 years. It’s free to join and although they say no product purchase is required, you will still want to purchase a machine to familiarize yourself with the system and use it for demo purposes. The cheapest machine is $1,980. The machines are expensive so you will have to have a lot of people to talk to in order to recruit.

My Rating: 50 out of 100

What Is Enagic Kangen Water?

Enagic is an MLM company.

They are the pioneer and worldwide leader in water manufacturing of alkaline ionizers and water filtrations machines to make your drinking water cleaner and healthier than tap or bottled water.

Founded in 1974 by Hironari Ohshiro, Enagic is a Japanese-based company headquartered in Okinawa, Japan with global offices in 23 countries.

Founder of Enagic Hironari Ohshiro

Enagic developed their MLM business model in 2003 when they set up an office in the USA.

The business approach behind Enagic:

Enagic’s business philosophy is based on 3 health principles:

  1. Mental Health
  2. Physical Health
  3. Financial Health

Enagic’s company mission is to alter your drinking water into pure, safe, and healthy drinking water which is supposed to change your life.

Apparently, the water we drink is full of pollutants and contamination of food additives and agro-chemical. They say even bottled water can alter your PH balance in your body.

So what they do is filter your tap water. This is a process that removes pollutants and contamination of food additives and agro-chemicals from your drinking water. The result is you get pure drinking water that’s rich in hydrogen and reduced electrolyte.

This is why Enagic created their water filter systems. It’s supposed to make ionized alkaline and acidic waters.

Inside Enagic – Enagic Kangen Products

Enagic Kangen Water Machine products

Kangen Water is the trade name for the machines.

In case you’re curious what Kengen means…

Kangen from the Japanese Encyclopedia means “New Era” and refers to their history for an emperor’s reign (February 1243 to February 1247). One era ends and a new one starts.

The “New Era” is the health and wellness from all alkaline water because of the many health benefits announced by the Japanese Department of Health and Welfare.

This water is multi-purpose and can be used for drinking, cooking, cleaning and beauty.

It also has another meaning which I’ll explain below in the Compensation Plan section.

Enagic has quite a range of Kangen machines, the most expensive is the Leveluk Super 501 at $5,980 and the cheapest is the Leveluk JRII for $1,980.

They also sell parts and accessories, tea with turmeric, supplements, dietary, and soap bars.

Leveluk K8 = $4,980

Leveluk SD501 Platinum = $4,280

Leveluk SD501 = $3,980

Leveluk Super501 = $5,980

Leveluk JRII = $2,380

Leveluk R = $1,980

Leveluk SD501U = $4,980

So, would you really take your wallet out to purchase 1 machine?

Before you answer this, let’s look at how you can make money with their business opportunity.

We also need to find out if the Kangen Water really works.

How to Make Money with Enagi

Because Enagi’s business model is MLM, it has the typical 2 ways of making money.

  1. Sell the Kangen machines to the public by word of mouth in a non-retail environment and earn retail commissions. (i.e. your own personal sales are called “direct sales”)
  • Build your team by recruiting people and earn commissions and bonuses on the sales of your recruits and their recruits. (sales made by your team is “indirect sales”.

How To Get Started with Enagic

What I like about Enagic is it’s free to become a Distributor and you are not committed to purchasing any of their machines.

To get started you only need to find a sponsor and fill out a Distributor application form.

But there’s a problem, as much as I like the no personal purchase commitment benefit, let me ask you this.

Would you pay over $1,000 from someone you don’t know that has no product to show you?

People are cautious these days and afraid of being scammed.

You will want to know how it works to explain the functionality of a machine when people ask “How about a demo?” This means investing in 1 machine which you can purchase from your sponsor. The cheapest one is the Leveluk R for $1,980.

NOTE: If you watch YouTube videos, you will find the Distributors will say you need to purchase a machine, I’m assuming for the purpose of using it as a demo to your interested parties.

So what happens is, when you recruit someone to your team, they purchase their “personal” machine from you.

Leveluk R

If you have the money, you might want the top of the line Leveluk SD501U = $4,980

Enagic Leveluk SD501

Some of the other features you can get are also quite unusual from the typical workings of MLM companies:

  • No sign-up fee. It’s free to join.
  • No volume requirements (until you reach the highest rank 6A)
  • No need to stock inventory. You can save a lot of money and house space.
  • No forced product shipments
  • There are no time limits. With Enagic Kangen’s MLM system, you’re not under the gun all the time to sell a number of products in a limited amount of time.
  • There are no annual Distributor fees or renewals

Understanding Enagi’s Commission Plan

The other meaning of Kangen when translated into English is “return to origin”.

The commission structure is very different from the typical MLM owners who rake in the largest percentage of profits.

Instead, Enagi gives a lot of their profits back to you as their distributors in appreciation of your hard work….hence the “return to origin”.

Amazing and I have NEVER heard of any MLMs do this. Anyway, I just wanted to mention this to you.

Enagi refers to their commission structure as the “Basic 8-Point Commission”.

The MLM structure they use is the unilevel compensation plan.

Basic 8-Point Commission Plan

Indirect Sales on points used

It works on a promotional system meaning the larger your team builds the more you get paid per machine.

There are 6 ranks from 1A – 6A. Each rank requires 8 points in order to get paid.

Example, let’s use the K8 machine that sells for $4,980

Enagic Kangen K8

To rank 1A, you need to sell 2 machines (“unit”).

Rank 2A – Make 1 more direct sale.

Becoming 2A

The example is based on you making 2 direct sales and you have 2 people you recruited who each sold 2 machines. That’s a total of 6 sales.

Rank 3A – Now you want to start building your team in order to rank higher. This means you and or your team need to sell a total of 10 machines.

Rank 4A – Accumulated team total of 20 sales

Rank 5A – Accumulated team total of 50 sales

Rank 6A – Accumulated team total of 100 sales

Getting to 6A will mean both you and your team need to do a lot of sales and recruiting.

If you were to jump from 1 rank to another…

Jumping from one rank to another

In this image, let’s say right now you’re in Rank 2A. You made an additional 1 more direct sale ($680) and your recruits made 5 sales ($680 x 5 = $3,400).

In Rank 2A, there were a total of 6 sales + the sales that were just made is 6 more sales giving a total number of sales to 12.

This now puts you into the 3A Rank (11 – 20 Sales range). Now you can make $1,020 for every machine sold in this particular rank.

I hope all this makes sense to you. There is also a video coming up for you to watch in a more descriptive form…

The point is, can you make all those sales? The way I see it, one household only needs 1 machine and not only that they last for many years.

You’re going to have to always look for people to recruit. That’s how MLM works.

Enagi has other types of income commissions you can earn from:

  • Direct Sales Commission
  • Override Commission
  • Educational Allowance
  • Monthly Incentive
  • Quarterly Incentive
  • Title Incentive
  • Global Leadership Incentive

Here is a PDF of Enagi’s Compensation Plan and a good video that gives a great explanation of how the Plan works…

What I Like About Enagic

1, Free to Get Started

Enagic is different from other MLM companies because you don’t have to pay to get started. There is no starter fee.

However, you will want to purchase a machine to use for your demos and personal use. The least expensive one will cost you $1,980.

2. Google Trend Shows People Are Interested in Enagi

Google Trends on Enagic

According to Google Trend, people are interested in Enagi for their health and wellness benefits.

3. Numerous and Impressive Certifications

Just take a look at these certifications earned by Enagic International:

Impressive Certifications

Impressive yes?

ISO is the world’s #1 quality management system and Enagic International is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 13485.

This means they meet the standards of quality control and effective environmental management systems.

They also received the Water Quality Association Gold Seal for the quality of their product.

In addition, they were awarded the Prestigious Direct Selling Association (external link) for being a member in good standing

I don’t think you’ll see very many MLM companies achieve all this.

4.  Excellent Support and Marketing Tools

Enagic also seems to have an impressive support system as well as all the marketing tools to help your business grow. You have access to the following:

  • Your own personalized website hosted on their sub-domain
  • Prospecting Tools
  • Advertising Campaigns
  • Email Templates
  • Business Statistics
  • Business Training Video Library
  • Product Education Resouces with eBooks, slideshows, etc.
  • Mobile Friendly Apps
  • Live Chat and Phone Assistance
  • FAQ Blogs
  • Technical Support
  • Marketing Materials like brochures, posters and magazines $$$

5.Been In Business a Long Time

Enagic has been around since 1974 and I’m sure they will be around a long time. Even though they started their MLM business model in 2003,  they continue to survive.

When you look at their website, it’s professionally done and well organized.

6.BBB A+ Rating

There 23 complaints in the last 3 years and 9 complaints in the last 12 months that were closed.

BBB A Plus Rating

There is no perfect business and there will always be some grumbling on products and services but on the whole, Enagic seems to be handling issues as best they can.

BBB Positive Testimonial

BBB Positive Testimonial

BBB Negative Testimonial

Dissatisfactions seem to be on the service end.

7. Some People Are Making Money

There are definitely people who are making money. How much I don’t know because there is no Income Disclosure Statement, unfortunately.

However, people are buying them if you look at the BBB report on Enagic. They seem to be spending around $5,000 on a machine.

What I Don’t Like About Enagic

1.Expensive To Purchase A Machine

Enagic’s filter machines are simply too expensive, not many people can afford it

Even though they say there is no requirement to purchase a machine you need it to demo so your startup cost is expensive.

If you don’t have the money to invest and want to have an online business, you might want to consider another option… CLICK HERE!

2. Recruit, Recruit, Recruit…

Typical with MLM, you will go to your friends and family, neighbours, people you work, the corporate boss to make a sale. The truth is when you first join, you’ll be advised to contact these people first.

Because the products are expensive, aggressive selling will be needed. Rejections will require having a positive mindset.

There are other ways to promote the products thru social media and YouTube which may help.

I think if you want to get to the top rank, the 6A, the goal should be to approach 500 people to get 100 people recruited. Hopefully, your team is going to pitch in.

Tired of MLM? CLICK HERE For A Better Solution!

3. No Repeat Sales

Due to Enagic’s 5 year warranty and the thought of a household requiring 1 machine only, it seems unlikely you will get repeat machine sales from your same customer.

4. Misleading Health Claims

Unfortunately, there are some distributors who make false and misleading health and wellness claims that don’t help with Enagic’s reputation.

Claims like:

  • Weight loss
  • Prevent cancer
  • Look younger
  • Boost your energy
  • Get rid of body odour
  • Control your blood pressure
  • Live Longer

Kangen water is not a cure-all, if it were, everyone would be drinking it and health officials all over the world would be encouraging it. The ionized water has its own benefits but it’s not the “cure all” magic.

There are also people who say alkaline water is not good for you and to stay away from it.

CLICK HERE to read a report from Consumer Reports.

In all honesty, before you purchase any high-cost products especially to do with your health and wellness, it’s best to do your due diligence and research.

5. Not A Long-Term Sustainable Business

At some point, I think you’re going to feel like you have no more leads. Getting rejection after rejection can be disappointing.

The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) requested Jon M. Taylor, MBA to do a study on the MLM business model and the loss rates are shocking. CLICK HERE to read the complete report.

Report by Jon M Taylor at the request of the FTC

If you have experience in selling and are comfortable being face-to-face with people, I feel you can do quite well. If you don’t have the experience and you’re not very sociable (I’m not), any MLM company may not work well for you.

6. No Income Disclosure Statement

I would think twice before joining an MLM company that does not have an income disclosure statement. In my opinion, Enagic has been around long enough that they should be disclosing information on the average yearly income their Distributors have been earning.

Is Enagic a Scam?

Enagic is definitely not a scam. It’s a legitimate company and over 40 years old. If it was a scam, FTC would have shut them down years ago.

The fact that they received lots of accreditations speaks highly of their company

With the experience I have had with MLM, the more expensive the product is, the harder you have to work to recruit people.

Enagic’s machines are priced very high. I’m not saying they’re not worth the price but you will have to justify the cost with the benefits to the interested parties.  If you’re good at selling or take courses in selling and handling rejections, you will sell some machines.

However, I don’t see selling Enagic Kangen machines and recruiting as a long-term sustainable passive income for Distributors and it’s for this reason that I don’t recommend them.

You’re better to have an online business where people come to you.

Having said that, you might want to check Affiliate Marketing…

  1. Greetings Monica

First of all, thank you for explaining to us how the “ENAGIC KANGEN WATER” program works!

With the details you mentioned, I realize it is not a scam, but I also agree that it is not the best way to make money. I hate the idea of searching for people and recruiting to earn money, which I think at some point will become harder than before.

Furthermore, starting with more than $1,500 is hard for many of us, especially for those who are willing to start for free.

On the other hand, from what I can see, Wealthy Affiliate looks like a great platform. I did check them out. I don’t mind hard work. Let me go over this with my other half and see what she thinks. I’m looking for something… other than my day job.

    • Hi Georgio,

You’re welcome and thank you for your comment.

Multi-level marketing is a tough business to be in. There is always a lot of competition and of course, always chasing after people to recruit.

There’s a lot of people who want an online business opportunity and don’t have that kind of money to invest.

Wealthy Affiliate is definitely the right way to go to have an online business. You don’t need to be a techy person to learn. The training is easy to follow. It’s free to start, no upsells and this training will teach you how not to chase after people.

I hope you have a great conversation with your other half. Please let me know if you have any questions.

  2. I came to know about Enagic’s MLM strategy earlier this year through an ad that shows how to make money online.

Though you mention it’s free to join my experience was not free at all. The recruitment team asked me to pay like £97 to join their team to learn about it.

When I was inside the Enagic MLM that’s the time I realized it was not for me at all. First of all their products are very very very expensive. I asked for a refund but never got my money back. And just like what you have mentioned I have doubts on their claims about the health benefits of drinking water from Enagic.

If I came through this review before encountering Enagic’s ads then I would have not wasted my £97. This is a good review to guide other readers before making their decisions. Thanks for sharing this review.

    • Hi Gillian,

You’re welcome and thank you for your comment.

I’m sorry to hear you did not get your refund. Did you report it to BBB? They do a good job in following up on complaints. I don’t know why the recruitment team made you pay. I would definitely mention that as part of your complaint. BBB will help you get your money back so please do not stop pursuing it.

      Best wishes!

  3. Thanks for your in-depth review of Enagic Kangen Water.

I have been involved before with MLM companies and its all about selling products, which is great if the product is needed on a regular monthly basis you have a chance to make some money.

However, like you have pointed out once they purchase a product here that’s it! Talk about hard work, plus the products themselves are very costly which makes the sale even harder to close.

As you suggest I’m going to look more into your Wealthy Affiliate recommendation, it looks like I make some kind of recurring income.

  4. Hello Monica,

I worked in an MLM company. But I could not continue it for a long time because I didn’t like their marketing structure.

The products are so expensive and it was not a long term sustainable process like you say. That’s why I left from doing MLM.

By reading your post I am feeling very happy because I took a good decision. I like your post because it’s the way for me to make money long-term.

I will follow your recommended online business that Wealthy affiliate teaches because of its facilities and to learn for a lifetime income source. Thanks a lot. Your post is really helpful. I will share your post to others.

Wonderful, when you join for free, I’ll welcome you and help you every step of the way to your success of having an online business.

Affiliate marketing is a very legitimate industry. There is no doubt about that.

The sad part is, there are affiliate marketing scams that some people fall prey to and so this puts a bad taste in their mouths.

People need to be aware of false affiliate marketing training, certainly the “get rich” offers, the pay to play and so on.

Just make sure to do your due diligence and research the way you did that got you to my review.

I appreciate you sharing my review to others, thank you. 😀

  5. Hi Monica

This article was very helpful for me, thanks for sharing it. I paid $149 2 weeks ago to sign up with selling for Enagic, but the more I thought about it the more I realized that it will be impossible to get from one level to the next with the products being so expensive and little certainty as to if they truly work giving the results that are being advertised.

They (DT) which is the name of the private group try to insist on me buying what they call the Trifecta so I could earn double the commission. This is a $10,000 purchase. That is a lot of money to spend with no guarantee to make back a penny of it. I felt it was too risky and not enough information to sell the product. Plus I don’t want to sell products just to make money I am more interested in the benefits the buyer will get, as you mentioned at the very top of the article.

    Thanks Again

      I’m really sorry I didn’t respond earlier.

Thank you very much for reading my review of Enagic Kangen. Whew!! I’m glad you thought about it more…yes, their products are extremely expensive and not many people will want to invest that kind of money, especially in MLM. With the COVID around, it will be even harder to demonstrate the product(s) in person.

Yikes, 10,000 for a chance to double your commission… ridiculous indeed. I’m glad you have a level-head on your shoulders. ?

Take care and pls stay well.

      Kind Regards,
      Monica
